What is French Roulette?

French roulette is the ultimate game of chance. It originated in France, presumably from an experiment on perpetual motion by the 18th-century French scientist Blaise Pascal. It’s a game where players bet on a colour, number or numbers on the roulette wheel. The game comprises a table with a wheel numbered 0 to 36 in red and black alternating pockets and a small white ball. When then the wheel is spun the ball spins along tumbling around. After the wheel stops spinning the ball will land in one of the numbered pockets. Players who guessed the right pocket colour, number or range of numbers win and get paid out.

French Roulette Wheel

The French roulette wheel is what makes it different from American roulette. In French roulette, the wheel has a single zero while American roulette has two zero pockets on the wheel. The presence of a single zero on the wheel significantly reduces the house edge in French roulette to as low as 1,35%!

The numbers on the roulette wheel are not in consecutive order. In fact, the numbers on the wheel are grouped in 3 different categories Voisons du Zero, Tiers du Cylindre and Orphelins (there are two Orphelins sections on either side of the wheel).

  • Voisins du Zero – 22; 18; 29, 7; 28; 12; 35; 3; 26; 0; 32; 15; 19; 4; 21; 2; 25
  • Orphelins – 17; 34; 6 and 1; 20; 14; 31;9
  • Tiers du Cylindre – 27; 13; 36; 11; 30; 8; 23; 10; 5; 24; 16; 33

French Roulette Rules

French roulette has some special rules that significantly lower the house edge. The rules are La Partage and En Prison.

  • La Partage – The La Partage rule allows you to get half you wager back when you lose of even money bets. (Kind of similar to the blackjack surrender rule.)
  • En Prison – The En prison rule is like a second chance ticket in a lottery game. It “locks down” any lost even money bets and plays the bet again in the next round.

French Roulette Bets

French Roulette bets can be grouped into two categories – Inside and Outside Bets.

Inside Bets are bets that are “inside” or in the central columns that align with the zero section on the roulette table.

Outside bets are bets that lie on the outer wings of the table.

The outside bets are all written in French and they are:

  • Manque – bets on numbers 1 – 18
  • Passe – bets on numbers 19 to 36
  • Impair – meaning bets on odd numbers
  • Pair – meaning bets on even numbers

How to Play French Roulette Online

Playing French roulette is easy whether you are a beginner or familiar with the game. All you have to do is bet on a single number, a group of numbers or a colour.

When you play online there are multiple roulette tables to choose among.

  1. Start by making a real money deposit
  2. Choose a chip with the bet amount you prefer
  3. Select a bet, then click to get the wheel spinning.
  4. When the wheel stops if you have won, your wins are credited to your balance immediately
  5. You can continue betting or make a withdrawal.

French Roulette Table

In roulette, there is a wheel and a table that has all the numbers and bets you can make written on it. The French Roulette table and wheel are unique because all bets on the wheel and table are written in French. That should not intimidate you if you do not know any French because the numbers are also written along with the French names for the bets. So, you can just look at the numbers and make your bets as you would in any other roulette game.
